In support of Green Entrepreneurs

In a world where good news is not always easy to find, it is certainly a great inspiration to meet passionate and motivated young entrepreneurs who are determined to BE THE DIFFERENCE in our beautiful South Africa.

Hugo Ngcobo

Company: Songimvelo

Area: Pietermaritzburg (KZN)

Email: songimvelorecyclers@gmail.com

Hugo and his business partner Irvin Khumalo, started a recycling project in Pietermaritzburg (KZN) almost two years ago. They currently service 53 schools, as well as business, shops and community areas. They recently received a piece of land from their local municipality (which is currently under development) which will be used as a buy-back-centre to support the local waste pickers in their area. Hugo is a 22 year old recycling entrepreneur with loads of passion, drive and a head for business. Hugo attended the Green Youth Indaba last week and was asked to join the ‘Movers & Shakers’ panel, which acknowledged young entrepreneurs that have made a huge difference in their community and environment.

Hugo is a remarkable person and a true recycling champion!

Zwelibanzi Mnguni, Faith Diketane and Emily Masigo

Company: Destination Green

Area: Tembisa (Gauteng)

Email: destinationgreen.recycling@gmail.com

The young group of Destination Green started recycling in Tembisa in January 2016 and have grown from strength to strength. Destination Green partnered with The Nelson Mandela Foundation and was in charge of the waste management at the Nelson Mandela Day launch event in Tembisa on 8 June 2016. They have identified the need to support their local community and ‘recycling mammas’ to transport their recyclables to the nearest buy-back-centre. This helps the local recycling waste pickers to get their payment for their recyclable immediately and this also prevents some recycling companies to not take advantage and not pay on the correct weight of the recyclables. Their next goal is to open their own buy-back-centre, which will help reduce the litter in their community and also help create more jobs.

Steven Mabugana

Company: Aqua Amazing

Area:  Durban (KZN)

Email:mabbrocc@gmail.com

Steven has developed a unique way to motivate and educate the community on marine and environmental issues. His hands-on approach includes shark dissection, whilst presenting amazing facts and figures relating to sharks, marine conservation and marine science matters. His tailor made offerings are supported by private companies, public and governmental sectors as well as the Department of Education. Steven travels all across South Africa educating students.  Last year he reached a staggering total of over 500,000 learners!

The group was recently taken on a recycling tour of the entire recycling value chain – Sorting facilities, mechanical recycling plant, manufacturing and will provide plastics recycling training at Plastics|SA's offices in Midrand.
